Short answer: The UMPJE has been available to Virginia candidates since September 1, 2026. The Virginia MPJE is administered through September 30, 2026. From October 1, 2026, applicants for a Virginia pharmacist license — initial licensure or license transfer — must pass the UMPJE, and the Virginia MPJE is neither offered nor required.
That leaves a short window in which both exams exist. This article covers what changes on October 1, who is affected, what happens to an appointment booked past the retirement date, and how to decide which exam to sit if you are reading this while the window is still open.
The dates that matter
Three dates, and they are easy to confuse because they are not the same date.
September 1, 2026 — UMPJE administrations began in Virginia. NABP lists Virginia's UMPJE start date as September 1. If you are eligible, you can sit the UMPJE for Virginia licensure now.
September 30, 2026 — last day for the Virginia MPJE. This is the retirement date NABP publishes for Virginia's state-specific exam.
October 1, 2026 — the UMPJE becomes the requirement. The Virginia Board of Pharmacy states that beginning October 1, 2026, applicants seeking a Virginia pharmacist license as an initial license or a license transfer must successfully pass the UMPJE, and that Virginia will no longer offer or require the Virginia MPJE as of that date.
Virginia is the thirteenth jurisdiction to adopt the UMPJE.

If you have a Virginia MPJE appointment booked
Check the date on it before you do anything else.
NABP has stated that MPJE appointments scheduled on or after a jurisdiction's retirement date are canceled and a full refund is issued. You do not keep the seat, and the cancellation is not something you can appeal by explaining your circumstances — the exam form itself stops existing.
If your appointment falls on or before September 30, it stands. If it falls after, you need UMPJE eligibility and a new appointment, and you should not wait for the cancellation notice to start that process.
NABP has also said that a candidate with an active MPJE application who no longer wishes to take that exam can contact Exam Services to close the application and receive a full refund of the application and examination cost. If you are switching deliberately rather than being switched, that is the route.
Who this affects
Graduates seeking initial Virginia licensure. After October 1, the UMPJE is the law exam. There is no Virginia-specific alternative.
Pharmacists transferring a license into Virginia. This is the part most people miss. The Board's notice names license transfer explicitly alongside initial licensure — the change is not limited to new graduates. NABP lists Virginia's transfer requirement as Yes, meaning a jurisprudence exam is required for transfer rather than waived.

Pharmacists who already passed the Virginia MPJE. Generally, passing a jurisdiction's law exam before its retirement date satisfies that requirement for that jurisdiction. Confirm your own situation with the Virginia Board rather than relying on any article, this one included.
Which exam should you sit while both exist?
A real question for anyone eligible right now, and the honest answer depends on one thing: whether Virginia is your only jurisdiction.
If Virginia is the only license you will ever want, and you are already deep in Virginia-specific preparation with a seat available before September 30, sitting the Virginia MPJE is defensible. You would be finishing the work you already did.
If you expect to hold licenses in more than one state, take the UMPJE. This is the whole argument for the exam's existence. MPJE scores are not transferable between jurisdictions, because each MPJE is built for one jurisdiction. UMPJE scores transfer to other participating jurisdictions. Thirteen jurisdictions participate today and NABP has said more are expected to follow.
If you have not started studying, take the UMPJE. Preparing for an exam that is retired within weeks buys you a credential in one state and nothing beyond it.
Score transfer, and the 89-day window
UMPJE score transfer can be purchased when you register for the exam, or up to 89 days after you take it. That second window is the one people lose. If you sit the UMPJE for Virginia in October and decide in March that you also want Maryland, the transfer purchase window has closed and you are re-taking an exam you already passed.
If there is any chance of a second jurisdiction, buy the transfer inside the window.
What the UMPJE tests that the Virginia MPJE didn't
The Virginia MPJE tested Virginia law — the Drug Control Act, Board of Pharmacy regulations in 18VAC110, Virginia-specific controlled substance and dispensing provisions.
The UMPJE tests federal pharmacy law plus state-law principles common across participating jurisdictions. NABP is explicit that it is not a federal law exam; it is built on the commonality between state laws, with federal law included.
What stops earning marks: Virginia-specific numbers and provisions that do not generalize — the exact text of 18VAC110, Virginia-particular registration rules, state-specific limits that differ from the norm.
What matters more: Federal law at depth. DEA controlled substance requirements, DSCSA, HIPAA, FDA authority, USP compounding standards. On a state exam, federal content competes for space with state minutiae. On the UMPJE it is a much larger share of the whole.
What carries over unchanged: Corresponding responsibility. Valid prescription requirements. Prescriber authority. Counseling obligations. Recordkeeping. Board disciplinary authority. Studied as concepts rather than as Virginia trivia, that work holds.
Worth saying plainly: passing the UMPJE does not mean you can practice in Virginia without knowing Virginia law. You will work under the Drug Control Act and 18VAC110 every shift. The exam changed. The practice did not.
The format, exactly
The UMPJE is 120 questions — 100 scored and 20 unscored pretest items you cannot identify — with 150 minutes of testing time. The total appointment runs 2 hours 50 minutes, the extra time covering the non-disclosure agreement, the tutorial, and the post-exam survey.
It uses adaptive technology. You cannot skip a question and you cannot go back to change an answer. Results are reported as Pass or Fail.
Two consequences worth internalizing before test day. First, pacing is roughly 75 seconds per question, and there is no returning to a question you rushed. Second, because you cannot review, the habit of flagging uncertain items and revisiting them — which works on most exams — is unavailable here. You commit and move.
The exam allows a maximum of five attempts unless a board of pharmacy determines otherwise, and the mandatory wait after a failed attempt is 30 days unless your jurisdiction requires longer.
How to adjust your study plan
If you had not started: study for the UMPJE using NABP's official content outline as the map. Skip Virginia-specific prep material.
If you were mid-preparation for the Virginia exam: your federal law work transfers directly. Your Virginia-specific work keeps its practice value and loses most of its exam value. Re-anchor on the four UMPJE domains and audit what you have already covered against them.
Study proportionally, not evenly
NABP publishes the UMPJE Content Outline with four domains and their approximate weights. It is the most useful free document available to you, because it tells you what share of the exam covers what. Even coverage across topics is the most common way candidates waste the weeks they have.
Use the Pre-UMPJE to calibrate, not to prepare
NABP's Pre-UMPJE is a 40-question official practice exam bought through your e-Profile. Forty questions is a diagnostic, not a study program — it tells you roughly where you stand and does not build competence. Take it early enough that the result can still change your plan.

Can I still take the Virginia MPJE? Through September 30, 2026, if you are eligible and can get a seat. From October 1 it is neither offered nor required.

Is the UMPJE easier than the Virginia MPJE? Different, not easier. You trade Virginia-specific memorization for broader federal depth and conceptual reasoning about state law. Candidates who memorize well and reason poorly tend to find it harder.
Where do I register? Through your NABP e-Profile, the same as any NABP examination. You select a primary jurisdiction when you apply.
