Short answer: Kansas administers the Uniform MPJE as of April 1, 2026. The Kansas MPJE is administered through March 31, 2027. After that date the UMPJE is the jurisprudence exam for Kansas licensure.

The dates that matter
UMPJE administrations begin: April 1, 2026
Kansas MPJE administered through: March 31, 2027
Those are two different dates, and the gap between them is the overlap window — the period in which both exams exist and some candidates have a choice. Once the retirement date passes, the choice is gone.
NABP lists Kansas's requirement for licensure transfer as Yes. Confirm what that means for your own application with the Kansas Board of Pharmacy — boards set their own transfer requirements.
If you have a Kansas MPJE appointment booked
Check the date on it before anything else.
NABP has stated that MPJE appointments scheduled on or after a jurisdiction’s retirement date will be canceled, and a full refund issued. You do not keep the seat, and it is not a decision you can appeal — the exam form stops being administered.
If your appointment falls on or before March 31, 2027, it stands. If it falls after, you need UMPJE eligibility and a new appointment, and you should start that rather than waiting for the cancellation notice.
NABP has also said that a candidate with an active MPJE application who no longer wishes to sit it can contact Exam Services to close the application and receive a full refund of the application and examination cost.
Which exam should you sit while both exist?
If you are eligible during the overlap, the honest answer turns on one question: whether Kansas is the only jurisdiction you will ever want.
If Kansas is your only license, ever, and you are already deep into Kansas-specific preparation with a seat available before the retirement date, sitting the state MPJE is defensible. You would be finishing work you have already done.
If you expect to hold licenses in more than one state, take the UMPJE. This is the entire reason the exam exists. MPJE scores are not transferable between jurisdictions, because each MPJE is built for one. UMPJE scores can be transferred to other participating jurisdictions.
If you have not started studying, take the UMPJE. Preparing for an exam that retires shortly buys you a credential in one state and nothing beyond it.
Score transfer, and the window most people miss
A UMPJE score transfer can be purchased when you register for the exam, or up to 89 days after the exam date. NABP advises purchasing as soon as possible, because waiting until the last day may mean the option is no longer available. Transfers bought after the exam are nonrefundable, and you cannot change the destination jurisdiction once you have tested.

What the UMPJE tests that a state MPJE doesn’t
A state-specific MPJE tests that state’s statutes and board regulations. The UMPJE tests federal pharmacy law plus state-law principles that are common across participating jurisdictions. NABP is explicit that it is not a federal law exam; it is built on the commonality between state laws, with federal law included.
What stops earning marks: Kansas-specific numbers and provisions that do not generalize.
What matters more: federal law at depth — DEA controlled substance requirements, DSCSA, HIPAA, FDA authority, USP compounding standards. On a state exam, federal content competes for space with state minutiae. On the UMPJE it is a far larger share of the whole.
What carries over unchanged: corresponding responsibility, valid prescription requirements, prescriber authority, counseling obligations, recordkeeping, board disciplinary authority. Studied as concepts rather than as Kansas trivia, that work holds.
Worth saying plainly: passing the UMPJE does not mean you can practice in Kansas without knowing Kansas law. You will work under that state’s pharmacy practice act every shift. The exam changed. The practice did not.
How to adjust your study plan
If you had not started: study for the UMPJE using NABP’s official content outline as the map, and skip Kansas-specific prep material.
If you were mid-preparation for the state exam: your federal law work transfers directly. Your Kansas-specific work keeps its practice value and loses most of its exam value. Re-anchor on the four UMPJE domains and audit what you have covered against them.

Frequently asked questions
Can I still take the Kansas MPJE? Through March 31, 2027, if you are eligible and can get a seat.
My appointment is after the retirement date. What happens? NABP cancels appointments scheduled on or after the retirement date and issues a full refund. Start the UMPJE eligibility process rather than waiting for the notice.
I passed the Kansas MPJE already. Do I need the UMPJE? For your existing Kansas license, generally no. Confirm with the Kansas Board of Pharmacy for your specific circumstances.
Does passing the UMPJE license me in every participating jurisdiction? No. It satisfies the jurisprudence exam requirement in participating jurisdictions, which is a real simplification for multi-state licensure. Each board still has its own application, fees and additional requirements.
Is the UMPJE easier? Different, not easier. You trade state-specific memorization for broader federal depth and conceptual reasoning about state law. Candidates who memorize well and reason poorly tend to find it harder.
Where do I register? Through your NABP e-Profile, the same as any NABP examination. You select a primary jurisdiction when you apply.
