Thirteen jurisdictions have adopted the Uniform MPJE, and the rest still use their own state MPJE. Which one you sit depends on your jurisdiction and where you are in the process. Answer two questions below.

Why this is confusing

Until 2026 there was one answer: every jurisdiction had its own MPJE, and you sat a separate one for each state. The UMPJE changed that for participating jurisdictions, but it arrived in waves, each with its own start date and its own retirement date for the old exam. Several jurisdictions run both at once for a period, which is why two candidates in neighboring states can correctly be preparing for different exams.

The three questions that actually decide your path are which jurisdiction, whether its overlap window is still open, and whether you already hold a score that can move. That is what the tool above works through.
